Joe Leahy: Wheels away in celebration after scoring Merlins Bridge’s winner

MERLINS BRIDGE moved top of the Pembrokeshire League as they came from behind to beat Carew 3-2 at the Racecourse on Saturday (Feb 11).

Carew had gone unbeaten in seven games after their last defeat, which came at the end of October against Merlins Bridge, and they pushed the Wizards all the way again on Saturday.

It was Carew who took the lead in the first half as they looked to continue their good run of form when Ian Derbyshire scored with 15 minutes gone.

Merlins Bridge equalised 12 minutes later as a corner into the box was cleared but only as far as Matthew D’ivry, who controlled the ball before firing an unstoppable shot in off the post to make it 1-1.

It stayed 1-1 until half time in what was an even game between two very good sides.

The home side dominated in the opening stages of the second half but they were unable to find a second goal.

With 20 minutes to go, Carew caught Merlins Bridge on the break and Scott Ferney scored to make it 2-1 to the Rooks.

The Wizards then had a goal disallowed but they eventually made it 2-2 with seven minutes to go when Steve McNabney was played through into the box and he slid the ball past the keeper into the far corner of the net.

Four minutes later, the turnaround was complete as McNabney crossed from the left hand side and the ball was eventually smashed home by Joe Leahy.

The Wizards held on to secure their 12th win of the season and bring an end to Carew’s recent good run of form.

On Saturday (Feb 18), Merlins Bridge will look to keep their position at the top of the table as they take on Lamphey.

Carew will be looking to get back to winning ways as they travel to bottom side Johnston on the same day.
